2021- Brookwood Chess Club -2022
Who: Brookwood Students in grades k-6th
What: Brookwood chess a club for students who want push them selves mentally, have fun for a shy Kindergarten student, to the really old :) and confident 6th grader. We have a lot fun activities like our team breakfast party, donut days, sticker awards, tournaments, and fun coaches. Our mission is to provide a great environment for students to learn sportsmanship and leadership while also learning how to play chess. Brookwood has had a chess club for 12 years, in those 12 years we have gone to the state tournament 10 years, and took 3rd place twice last year.
Where: upstairs in a open space
Details: Chess club is a team of students who like to challenge each other. There will often be instructional chess lessons and homework. No experience is required, learn and play for fun or competition. Parents, this is not free babysitting… students need to be ready to listen, learn and want to be challenged mentally. There is no charge to join but optional tournaments often cost $5-$10. We are a “Chess For Success” program.
Our Goals for Chess Club:
1. Have a fun in a structured environment where students can be mentally challenged
2. Give students the opportunity to feel successful mentally, and be part of a “smart group to build their intellectual self-esteem
3. Give students opportunities to build friendships in an intellectual way
4. Give older students the opportunity to mentor students and take on leadership roles
5. Teach/Give them challenging concepts and situations that can be practiced and applied
